Course Outline and Assigned Readings

Jan. 20

We won't meet in class tonight, as I will be in SF at a Ruby on Rails training class, so we can better cover later in the semester! For tonight, just make a post to the blog (same as last semester, new people will be invited) and make sure you refresh your memory on HTML and CSS. We will not be reviewing!

Google Maps/Google Wave

  • Read - Google Maps Is Changing the Way We See the World by Evan Ratliff, Wired July 07
  • Google Maps API - register for a key and use the handout to create a simple map. The Google Maps API gives you a great deal of flexibility in creating your own maps applications. Developers use it for doing mashups with other applications and data. Applications are hosted on your own server.
  • MyMaps - click on MyMaps in the Google window. This is a simpler, graphically-oriented method of creating your own Map applications. You can annotate maps, create markers, add photos and video. Maps are hosted on a Google server. Directions can be found here. Photos must be hosted somewhere on the Web. Videos must be hosted by YouTube or Google Video.

You must have a Google or Gmail acct to access these features.

Assignment - Using both techniques, create a map that might support some element of your project. Try both the photo and video techniques for MyMaps.
