Google Maps

  • Read - Google Maps Is Changing the Way We See the World by Evan Ratliff, Wired July 07
Dispatches From the Hyperlocal Future by Bruce Sterling,Wired July 07
  • Google Maps API - register for a key and go through the documentation for using the API (Application Programming Interface). The Google Maps API gives you a great deal of flexibility in creating your own maps applications. Developers use it for doing mashups with other applications and data. Applications are hosted on your own server.
  • MyMaps - click on MyMaps in the Google window. This is a simpler, graphically-oriented method of creating your own Map applications. You can annotate maps, create markers, add photos and video. Maps are hosted on a Google server. Directions can be found here. Photos must be hosted somewhere on the Web. Videos must be hosted by YouTube or Google Video.

You must have a Google or Gmail acct to access these features.

Assignment - Using both techniques, create a map that might support some element of your project. Try both the photo and video techniques for MyMaps.
